As we left Sri Lanka and were en route to Bali we had a 3 day stop over in the city of Kuala Lumpur- and what a city it is… We stayed in China Town, which felt like a city of its own that was simply nestled on the outskirts of downtown KL. These two areas could not have contradicted one another any more. Downtown KL is dominated by tall and commanding structures and has the hustle and bustle that every major city across the globe seems to uphold. Seeing the Petronas Towers and the seemingly endless array of shopping malls, it is prevalent that affluence abounds.
China Town, on the other hand, has a humble air and culture seems to be pouring out of every corner. Although there is a hustle and bustle here as well, it does not seem to be from business meetings and shopping sprees, but more from an animation of the people themselves and the markets that surround them. The commotion in China Town is a much more jovial and relaxed kind of hustle and bustle.
Not far from the city is a spectacular Hindu shrine and temple referred to as the ‘Batu Caves’. It is one of the most impressive religious sites I have ever seen. As you approach the caves you are confronted with a gold coloured statue of Lord Murugan that stands 140 ft tall, and then you walk up 272 steps to the entrance of the cave and the sight is just awe-inspiring. Seeing things like the Batu Caves is the reason I love traveling so much 🙂
