Christian contacted me about photographing the proposal he was planning to his girlfriend Brittny, while on a weekend getaway here in Victoria. He’d never been to Victoria before, so I was more than happy to help him plan and execute the details. The most important two things we needed to figure out for this Victoria BC Proposal was:
Location & Timing
The added benefit of hiring a photographer for your out of town proposal, is that photographers know all the best locations. We can give you a myriad of options based on a few factors… How much time are we working with/how far can we go? What kind of backdrop do you want (nature/urban)? Would you prefer the location to be more secluded, or is a busy spot ok?
Christian and Brittny were flying into Victoria around 5pm. Christian knew he wanted to propose as soon as he could after arriving in Victoria so that him and Brittny could relish in the excitement for the rest of the weekend.
They were staying in a hotel in the core of downtown. Christian told me that he’d be extra nervous if he had to propose in a busy spot with a bunch of people around, so downtown wasn’t ideal. He didn’t want to stray too far though, because he wanted him and Brittny to still have ample time afterwards to wander, and explore Victoria. I told him I had just the spot for him… we decided on a place called Gonzales Hill- only a ten minute drive from downtown. This is one of my favourite locations, as it’s up on a big hill in a residential area (so it’s usually fairly quiet), and it has stunning views of the ocean, with part of the city in the background.
I went up to Gonzales Hill a couple of days before the big day to make a video for Christian. I wanted to show him what it looked like, and explain where to go, etc. This way, I knew exactly where they would stand (or kneel ;)), and where I would hide.
Thinking about myself in Brittny’s position, another thing to consider for this Victoria BC Proposal was:
Food
We were planning on doing some engagement style portraits right after the proposal, so I knew Christian and Brittny were going to be having a late dinner. If I had rushed to the airport after work, boarded an airplane, landed in Victoria, and gone straight to the hotel, I would definitely be pretty hungry by the time I arrived. I suggested to Christian that we have with us, some champagne for toasting, and pizza for a snack.
Having the champagne and food also gave Christian, Brittny, and I, a bit more ‘relaxed’ time to get to know one another before jumping into a photo shoot. Not every photo session allows the opportunity to meet beforehand and have the time to get comfortable with one another, so the champagne and pizza was really nice ‘down time’ for just that.
Having your engagement photos done immediately after your proposal is a great idea, as your excitement and energy is at an all time high. Christian and Brittny were both so elated, and that really shines through in their photos.
