“Planning a wedding is stressful; at many times we thought to ourselves “we should have just eloped.” Regardless of what you do to keep the stress at bay, there are always things that go wrong when planning for a 100 person event. In all of the busy and sometimes stressful planning was one shining beacon of hope – Ashlene. She checked in constantly, made an effort to get to know the two of us and to learn what, and who, was important to capture on our day. She even went so far to memorize our bridal party and family members, so she could address everyone by name. “I hired Ashlene to do a portrait session for my business website, and I could not be happier with the results! I had high hopes going into the session, but she far exceeded all of my expectations. Deciding on location and theme was very collaborative, and I felt like she gave me freedom to introduce some ideas I had in terms of my vision around these photos, while also moving the session in a creative direction beyond my imagination.

Working outside, Ashlene was clearly in her element, and she seemed to have endless ideas around different shots and angles as we moved along the beach. The session captured a variety of lighting options, as we timed it around sunset, as well as a perfect variety of candid photos, posed photos, and many distance perspective options. “I connected with Ashlene in a very synchronistic way as she photographed our friends’ wedding last summer and my partner and I were both in the wedding party. We got to see Ashlene hard at work and marvel at the beautiful shots she captured of their day. I contacted my friend who had hired Ashlene for their wedding and asked whether she recommended her or not. She only had good things to say so I sent off an email and Ashlene responded within a day.

She initiated an in-person meeting in Vancouver that month as she was coming to town. I remember feeling so reassured from the beginning as Ashlene took such time and care in her correspondence with me. We met for coffee and it felt like I was meeting with a long-lost girlfriend! We spoke about the wedding plans for an hour or so and after that meeting I knew 100% that she would be our photographer and we signed the contract that week. All of our dealings with Ashlene were pleasant – she’s organized, professional, and caring.

When she was in Vancouver again a month or so later we made the trek out to our ceremony and reception venues so she could have an understanding of the spaces. We had so much fun! A couple weeks before our big day, Ashlene sent a beautiful card in the mail with a little gift – so thoughtful. Around that time, we decided to extend her hours so we could capture the dance on film. Once again, Ashlene was flexible and responsive and we made that change easily.

The day of, Ashlene showed up on time and with a can-do attitude. When I saw her at the ceremony I felt such reassurance – I knew we were in good hands. It’s kind of funny thinking back to the day because Ashlene has a way of just capturing every moment!! And she does so in the most subtle and non-intrusive way. Half the time you don’t even know she’s there! Looking at the photos she captured, you would think she had a team of three. During the wedding party and family shots, Ashlene took charge – but in a polite way, of course – which was so helpful as my partner and I were in la-la land and our families and wedding party were huge. During the couple portrait session we had an absolute blast! Ashlene let us do our own thing so we didn’t feel forced or awkward and our personality was captured. But she knew when to step in with stylistic suggestions and I’m glad she did.

Ashlene was with us through every moment of our big day – our vows, our first kiss, our walk down the isle, the toasts, the first dance – and she captured those moments perfectly. She captured the joy, the love, the humor, the spirit. Ashlene even joined us for our zany party bus ride from the ceremony to the reception and she melded right in like an old-time friend. So many friends and family commented on what a nice person and professional photographer she was.

It’s hard not to be nervous-excited when your photos are ready but after looking through the entire collection I felt overjoyed with her work. It was like reliving the day.
